Colchester Zoo

Colchester Zoo is a zoological garden in the English town of Colchester. Many uncommon and endangered species live there, including big cats, monkeys, birds, and various invertebrates and fish. The Zoo first opened its doors in 1963, and on June 2, 2013, it celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Colch­ester Zoo's animal habitats are divided into several themed zones, including King­dom of the Wild, Lake­lands zone, Heights, Valley, and Aquatic zones. The Orang­utan For­est is one of the most recent enclosures conceived and erected. The enclo­sure is designed in a naturalistic manner to encourage this arbo­real primate to climb to the top. Rain­wa­ter col­lec­tion facil­i­ties have been built into the architecture of the building, allowing the keep­ers to clean the enclosures and water the plants with the rainwater collected.

Colch­ester Zoo is the first Zoo in the United Kingdom and a few in Europe to have successfully raised four aard­vark babies, three of whom are actively involved in the breeding programme. The Zoo is the most successful in the UK at breeding Gelada Baboons, and it also contains the most significant breeding group of Man­drills in the UK, with around 25 Man­drills, making it Europe's second-largest troop.

The Zoo encountered one of its most difficult challenges in 2001 when the foot and mouth crisis forced it to close its doors to the public. The Zoo lost £250,000 during its closure, which lasted just over a month.

Colch­ester Zoo is well-known for its cutting-edge, ground-breaking animal enclosures. When designing a new enclo­sure, several factors must be considered, including all of the demands of the species for which the enclo­sure is being designed, the number of ani­mals the enclo­sure will house, as well as its welfare and safety.

Colchester Zoo is committed to encouraging, supporting, and performing research that helps captive animal management, conservation programmes, and the body of scientific understanding about animals and their natural habitats. Colchester Zoo has always been concerned about the world's threatened species, and its charity Action for the Wild was founded to help initiatives worldwide.

It offers financial and technical help to increase local awareness of community conservation programmes and fund conservation research.

Colchester Zoo must follow the Health and Safety at Work Act and related legislation. There is a Health and Safety Policy in place at Colchester Zoo and a rigorous risk assessment system followed in all sections. Each department maintains a risk assessment file that identifies any potential dangers.

Colchester Zoo employs approximately 250 full-time and part-time employees. Seasonal personnel are engaged to manage the increased tourist numbers throughout the summer season.

Maintenance and Development

A whole construction staff comprised of carpenters, labourers, digger drivers, plumbers, and electricians - all responsible for constructing new animal cages and buildings around the park and maintaining all existing facilities.

Catering

Our culinary crew, which includes everything from washer uppers and cooks to catering assistants and cashiers, is in charge of running our many catering outlets across the Zoo and offering a high level of service to our clients.

Grounds 

This frantic crew ensures that the Zoo's 60 acres are kept immaculately clean, with bins removed regularly, paths kept clean and clear, and bathroom blocks maintained to a high standard.

Administration & Guest Services

This section handles group bookings, the numerous "Keeper for the Day" experiences available, and the sale of our Gold. They also serve as a resource for information and help to coordinate misplaced guests and property.

Team for Communication and Development

This team is in charge of all public relations and promotions. They design posters, organise filming for programmes like Zoo Days, and produce our Zoo Matters Newsletter in addition to maintaining and enhancing the Zoo's online presence on the internet and social media.

Accountancy and Human Resources

This team assists with job applications, ensuring that all employees are paid on time, invoices are sent, and suppliers are paid!

Team Animals

The animal keepers are one of the most numerous groups in Colchester Zoo. They watch after everything, from our Curators to our Trainee Keepers. Among the 240 animal species' daily demands to the highest criteria attainable.

Department of Discovery and Learning

This section is in charge of formal and informal learning at the Zoo. This department coordinates all studies and monitors the lectures across the Zoo. This section creates and updates the information signs and the student and homework helper packs.
